I saw my first "flattie" in 1976 while out walking my first Labrador. I inquired as to what kind of dog he was and was promptly informed that he was a Flat-Coated Retriever and if I wanted to see more of them, I should go to the International Kennel Club show in Chicago where I would see "a lot of them". Thus began the journey...
I followed the breed over the years. They were often shown near the same time as Labs. In 1983 I moved to the Twin Cites in Minnesota. There were several breeders/exhibitors so I watched ringside and asked a lot of questions. After several disappointments with my Labs, I started to research the breed in earnest in 1984. That is when I found Pat DeBree of Petersfield fame and "Johnny".
"Johnny" was a wonderfully athletic dog, with a good head. He was blessed with effortless movement and a tireless attitude. He was my constant companion. I went in search of a mate that would compliment his strengths and improve on his short comings.
I found such a dog in "Misty". She came from Mark and Nancy Cavallo's Bertshire kennels Her father was the liver English import, CH. Terra Cotta Of Casuarina SH, from the famous working kennels of Casuarina. Her dam was from the well known CH. Bull Hill's Aspen X CH. Torwood Poppy, WC breeding.
Between the two of them, they gave me the foundation of some of the best show and working lines around. They succeeded beyond my wildest dreams, producing many champions, hunt, rally, tracking, dock-diving and obedience titles between them, Including a Hall Of Fame dog, as well as some good gun dogs. They are behind several Best In Show, Specialty Best Of Breed and Westminster Best Of Breed Winners.
The emphasis has always been on producing healthy dogs with outstanding temperaments. True to their heritage, Eden dogs are multi-talented in addition to being beloved family members. All Eden dogs trace back to one or both of these individuals. As always, all Eden dogs are owner handled to all of their titles.
